Skunk #1 was bred by the legendary Sacred Seeds collective in California, led by the breeders who would become the founders of the modern cannabis seed industry. It was the first truly stabilized hybrid that consistently expressed uniform traits from seed — a breakthrough that made commercial cannabis breeding viable. Skunk #1 crossed an Afghani indica (short flowering, resinous, heavy body effects) with Colombian and Mexican sativas (uplifting cerebral effects, vigorous growth). The result was a hybrid that flowered in a manageable 8-9 weeks, had high resin production, and delivered a balanced high that combined body relaxation with mental clarity. Skunk #1 became the cornerstone of the Dutch seed industry when its genetics were brought to the Netherlands and became the foundation for most European breeding programs.

History

Sacred Seeds was a California-based seed collective and nursery in the 1970s and early 80s that is considered the birthplace of the modern cannabis seed industry. Breeders including Sam 'The Skunkman' and others worked on stabilizing landrace genetics. Skunk #1 was their most famous achievement. When the US war on drugs intensified in the 1980s, Sam The Skunkman relocated to the Netherlands with Skunk #1 genetics, where they became the foundation of the Dutch seed industry. Sensi Seeds, which acquired the Skunk #1 line, has maintained the F1 generation since the 1980s. Skunk #1 has been used more than any other strain in modern cannabis breeding.
